Don Campbell writes and records Won't Wash Away in recognition of Nashville area floods and community response - May 6, 2010

Singer-songwriter Don Campbell, a national winner of the Colgate Country Showdown at the Grand Ole Opry, wrote and recorded a new song, "Won't Wash Away" this week in response to the historic rainfall and flooding events that hit Middle Tennessee over the weekend.  "Witnessing first hand how quickly people have joined together to help one another was the inspiration behind this song, which in effect, wrote itself," said Campbell from his home in Murfreesboro.

Last year, Campbell performed in the Chris Young & Friends Tornado Relief Concert to benefit victims of the Good Friday tornadoes in Murfreesboro, and in 2005, his song, "Say Goodbye to Heartache" was part of the Gulf Coast Healing: Independent Artists Band Together for Hurricane Katrina Relief CD.

In his native State of Maine, he has been a musical part of the "Wreaths Across America" escorts to Arlington Cemetery,  Jeff Gordon & Kyle Petty Foundation fundraising events, and many other annual benefits for a wide variety of organizations.  Campbell also penned "A Friend Right Here" which the Visiting Nurse Associations of America adopted as their theme song in 2002.

Don Campbell performs over 150 shows per year and has opened for Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith, Randy Travis, and many other country, folk and rock greats.
He is also a past national winner of the Jim Beam Country Band Search.

"Won't Wash Away" salutes the spirit of the people in Middle Tennessee communities in the midst of this tragedy.  It was written and recorded on May 5th in Murfreesboro.

Work on new music project featuring Don, his Dad and Uncles nears completion in the studio - November 9, 2009

When Don's ancestors moved from New Brunswick, Canada to Southern Maine, they brought their music and traditions of gathering with family and friends to play instruments and enjoy each others' company.

Don grew up with the Celtic and Canadian Maritime music that his relatives played when they got together, and it was through these gatherings that Don began playing guitar, piano and other instruments.

In 2006, Don recorded three of these traditional tunes with his Uncle Jack Campbell and earlier in 2009, he recorded a dozen others with his father, Don Sr. and his Uncle Jim.

In February, this special collection will be released on CD.  Several of the songs are upbeat instrumental pieces, featuring the fiddling of Don Sr.  Also included in the project is a new original song by Don, aptly titled, The Old Ways.

We are doing an advance copy sale of the CD and if you would like to order one or multiple copies (there is a substantial discount if you order 5 or more copies), you may download and print the order form here:

Remembering Don Campbell Sr. - October 1, 2009

Many of you are aware that Don's Dad passed away unexpectedly due to complications following a surgery in Florida on September 23rd. We thank you for your huge support, kindness, thoughts and prayers.

Campbell, Donald K. 75 Tampa, FLA

Donald K. Campbell passed away surrounded by family, after a brief illness on Wednesday, September 23, 2009.

Born in Lynn, MA to Clifford James and Florence Campbell on October 1, 1933.  Don grew up in Portland's "Libbytown" neighborhood.  He graduated from Portland High School, attended Portland Law a year, leaving to Military Service in the United States Marine Corps. Throughout his life he was proud of his service, proud of others serving today, and proud of his fellow veterans.  After his tour of duty, he returned home and married his childhood sweetheart, Catherine Foley.  Together, they raised three children.

Don enjoyed a long career with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co., where his first job was digging telephone pole holes by hand.  He then became a lineman.  From there, he rose through management.  In this capacity, he oversaw the conversion of many New England switching systems from analog, to the digital systems still in use today.  He was a polished, disciplined, "spitshined" leader who coached and encouraged those around him.  In 1989, Don retired from the phone company and he and Cathy moved to their home in Florida.

Don was an avid crossword puzzle wizard, a wonderful "cocktail style" piano player, a fiery fiddler who would often join his son Don and fellow bandmates on stage for a rousing Celtic Jig or reel.

Most of all, he was a wonderful, loving husband of 53 years to his wife, Catherine. He adored his kids, Steven and his late wife Janet, Don and his wife Tonya (Shevenell), and Catherine and her husband Michael (Tarbox).  He also held a special place for his grandson Cooper, who predeceased him in 2008.  Beyond his immediate family, Don was a friend to many, always wearing a smile, sharing a laugh, and extending a helping hand.  He was generous, thoughtful and great fun to be around.

Don was predeceased by his sister Carolyn, his brother "Jack", as well as his daughter-in-law Janet and grandson Cooper, all from Greater Portland.  He is survived by his wife and children, along with his brothers "Jim" of Peachtree City, GA, and Wayne of Portland, and sisters Beverly Clement of Arlington, MA, and Diane Scott of Freeport.

Don was a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, Eagles and Elks Clubs.  He also enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends and rounds played at Val Halla Country Club in Cumberland, Maine.

At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.  However, a celebration of his life will take place at a future date.  It was Don's wish that everyone carry on with happiness and kindness to each other.

Journal Entry: CMA Festival wraps up, summer rolls in! - June 22, 2009

June 22, 2009 - The Transition is On.  Last week we left 95+ degree days in Middle Tennessee following this year's very enjoyable CMA Music Festival in Nashville; convoyed 1235 miles; arrived in Maine in time for a Band show in Bar Harbor on Sunday (add another couple hundred miles); and are prepping for our first beach shows of the summer today.  Somewhere in that last long sentence, we lost the heat and the sun and picked up a lot of rain!

Fear not New England friends, we feel that true summer weather is on its way!

We are going to re-bust out our flip-flops, shorts, sunscreen and shades - they had been in active use in Nashville for several weeks before the migration - and hit the seasides for some music this week.

Check out our calendar as we'll be making a lot of live music all over New England this summer...Kennebunkport every Monday, Hampton Beach on 7 Wednesdays, Old Orchard Beach on 8 Friday afternoons, 3 cruises on Casco Bay with the Band, community and park shows, fairs and festivals, big opening events for Chuck Wicks, Eric Church and George Jones and much more.

Around shows, we're in the studio this summer, and we'll have a lot of new music for you soon - at shows, online and in stores.

Hope we can be part of your summer soundtrack no matter where you live.

We've got new DCB hats and key chains in stock!  They go great with flip flops, work boots, sandals, driving shoes, sneakers, and especially bare feet.  Relax, have some fun, and hope to see you soon!

Don

Journal Entry - April 28, 2009

April 28, 2009

Heart of a Tennessee Town

When I started spending time in Tennessee, I noticed similarities between its small towns and the small towns in my home State of Maine.  An appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, the capacity of people to watch out and care for one another, a hard work ethic, and a pace of living somewhat less affected by the speed of technology and the super-sized lifestyles found in other zip codes.

On April 10th, two tornadoes struck the town I have a home in here in Middle Tennessee.  900 homes and businesses were destroyed or heavily damaged.  Two people were killed.  The destruction is beyond  “Hollywood” special effects.  The F4 tornado, especially, with winds of 165-200 mph, came down out of the sky like an upside - down blender.  Seeing is not believing as you drive through parts of town.

On Friday, May 1st, a Tornado Relief Benefit Concert is taking place at the Murphy Center on the MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) campus.  Chris Young, RCA Nashville recording artist and Nashville Star winner, is a native of Murfreesboro, and he headlines the show, along with Richie McDonald, Emily West, and many others.  I am proud to be a part of this concert event.

Last Saturday, we had the opportunity to perform on one of the 28 stages along the route of the Country Music Marathon in Nashville. We were at the half-way point so we kept the uptempo tunes rolling for the runners (joggers, walkers…) as they were running up an incline by our stage, surrounded by the Millennium Hotel on one side and the beautiful St. Cecilia Motherhouse on the other.  We shared the stage with the Jefferson Street Blues Men fronted by 88-year old Johnny, these guys were incredible.  The sax player had toured with Jimi Hendrix; their music was fantastic.

There were a couple of highlights from this gig…one, towards the end of our first set, the Jefferson Street Blues Men drummer (not sure, but guessing around 75 himself) got up on stage and started playing some mean spoons for our final three songs.  Picture a bright sunny day, playing original tunes for the runners going by, joined by a veteran Blues Man, with spectators cheering along to include college kids from the local ATO fraternity chapter at a sports drink spot 100 yards past our stage AND Dominican sisters in full head-to-toe robed attire clapping along across the street, encouraging the runners and nodding in rhythm.   (The other highlight came during the JSBM’s next set as they broke into the Beatles’ “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road” – perfect theme for the event, but eyebrow-raising with Dominican Sisters across the street grooving along!)

I’ll close this blog but plan to write again this weekend after the Tornado Relief Benefit Concert.  Tonya and I are also being treated to a tour of the Gibson factory in Nashville on Friday morning, so May 1st will be a memorable start to the new month!

Wishing you the best and look forward to seeing Portland, Maine and New England friends during two upcoming road-trips north!  Check out the show schedule for May gigs and beyond!

Also, please read next entry down some great news about American Garage, our most recent CD release!

Your friend,

Don
